5/26/2017 - On April 29, 2017 at the Downtown Milford Bug & Bud Festival, Mayor Bryan Shupe drew a winning raffle ticket that awarded Greenwood resident Karen O’Brien a cruise vacation for two on Royal Caribbean International. The raffle was part of a year-long “Cruisin’ for a Cause” effort by Kent-Sussex Industries, Inc. (KSI) to expand its transportation system to better serve people with disabilities in their communities.

KSI kicked off the “Cruisin’ for a Cause” Raffle in March, 2016 as a fundraising effort for purchasing additional wheelchair lift-equipped vehicles. The vehicles are needed to help more people with disabilities access community work, learning and volunteer trips. In recent years, CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) instituted a final ruling that all services benefiting people with disabilities that are funded by Medicaid be delivered in the most community-integrated setting as possible. For many agencies serving the disability populations, including KSI, this necessitated greater transportation and staffing resources to accommodate more community-integrated programming.
KSI sold raffle tickets good for a chance to win a voucher toward?a four-to-five night cruise for two on Royal Caribbean. With open departure and cruise destinations based on?Royal Caribbean’s available trips, the Grand Prize was an Ocean View stateroom for?two,?with a $25 excursion voucher and?all?taxes and tips included. Tickets were sold at KSI events, as well as during two KSI Community Day fundraisers hosted by Milford’s Abbott’s Grill; a car show and quarter auction presented by the volunteer supporter group “Friends of KSI;” and community events like Milford’s Bug & Bud and River Walk Festivals, the Wyoming Peach Festival, Milford Farmer’s Market, and Bridgeville’s Apple Scrapple Festival. Total ticket sales resulted in more than $10,000 raised towards new wheelchair lift vehicle purchases.
In addition to the Grand Prize winner, Second Prize winner Alycia Hovey of Harrington received $100?cash, and Third Place winner Angela Allen of Lincoln?$50 cash. Ms. Hovey generously donated her cash winnings back to KSI to further support the organization.
KSI management thanks the more than 20 staff and additional KSI Board Members who spent many hours selling tickets at area events. In particular, special acknowledgement goes to KSI Board Member Scott Ward for his ticket sales and participation in many events. Special appreciation also goes to Board Member Patricia Rodriguez for going so far as to guest bartend for the cause with her son Charlie Rodriguez in Bald Jason’s Pub during one of the Abbott’s Community Days. KSI also thanks Abbott’s Grill owners Kevin Reading and Laura Burton for their generous continuing support of KSI and the people with disabilities it serves.
Additionally, the organization expresses its gratitude to Steve Monz, Gary Schofield and Delmarva Broadcasting for the ongoing promotion of KSI’s Cruise Raffle. Steve also participated with local businesswoman Angela Dorey as guest bartender during the October, 2016 Abbott’s fundraising event. Gratitude also goes to Angela Spishock, KSI Champion and organizer of the group “Friends of KSI” for access to ticket sales during their fundraisers. KSI also thanks Downtown Milford Incorporated (DMI) for their support with the 2017 Bug & Bud Festival, and The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Milford for promotional help in making the raffle a success. Finally, the organization appreciates Patti Persia of the travel agency Destinations to Explore for bringing the fundraising opportunity to KSI.
